Our Story

Artcite Inc. is a non-profit, artist-run centre for the contemporary Arts, dedicated exclusively to expanding the visibility of contemporary arts within our region and advancing the professional presentation, promotion and animation of contemporary art forms.

Incorporated in 1982, Artcite Inc. is a registered charitable organization and is a member of Artist-Run Centres and Collectives Conference [ARCCC], and Artist-Run Centres & Collectives Ontario [ARCCO] and is directed by; its membership, a volunteer board, and a team of staff members – the majority of whom are practicing professional artists themselves.

While primarily a visual arts centre, Artcite strives to continually expand traditional definitions and understandings of contemporary art by exploring the multiplicity of Canadian artistic practice representative of the diverse social and cultural make-up of this region.

We endeavor to exhibit, present and support regional, national and international artists who work in various media and disciplines, and who are at varying stages of their careers, with particular support for emerging, new generation and culturally under-represented artists.

Our mandate extends to the promotion of professionalism in the arts. This means that we support the artists we exhibit by paying professional artist fees at nationally established rates.

In our efforts to create progressive, inclusive, and engaging forums for critical dialogue, professional development, cultural exchange and outreach between the contemporary artists and communities we serve, Artcite also presents guest artist lectures, workshops and residencies; site installations and public art projects; social advocacy actions; film and video screenings; public readings by Canadian authors and poets; multi-disciplinary performance events and other special projects.

We exhibit, present and support regional, national and international artists who work in various media and disciplines.

Artcite is located in a storefront space in the Capitol Theatre and Arts Centre in Windsor’s downtown core.

Our exhibition space is fully climate-controlled, barrier-free and wheelchair accessible. Our gallery offers approximately 122 feet of running wall, 1100 square feet of exhibition area and large storefront windows that can be used for public, street-level displays.

For alternative and non-traditional art events like our Artseen and Summer Art Fest, which are multimedia, multi-artist, multi-venue exhibits of site-specific installation, Artcite works with community partners to secure vacant spaces and display opportunities with businesses and allied galleries.

Our activities serve to promote downtown Windsor as a vibrant cultural hub. Located 10 minutes from downtown Detroit Michigan, Artcite maintains strong connections with the greater South East Michigan arts community.

All Artcite exhibits are free and open to the public – there is never an admission charge to view a show at Artcite. A nominal admission charge may be levied for fundraising or off-site events.
