Artcite Inc. is a non-profit artist-run centre with a 42-year history of interdisciplinary contemporary art presentation in the Windsor-Essex/Detroit area. Our mandate is to support emerging, new generation, and culturally under-represented artists. A new era of art is among us while we aim to grow within our community and beyond.

We seek locally-based, dedicated applicants to serve a two-year renewable term. We invite persons who share a passion for contemporary art and engaging with the Windsor-Essex community to join our progressive board of directors.

Artcite Inc. strives to reflect the demographic diversity of Windsor. Therefore, we encourage the nomination of individuals from a variety of professional backgrounds, artistic disciplines, cultural communities, Indigenous heritages, orientations, genders, ages, and abilities.

The primary role of a volunteer Board Member is to help provide direction, expertise, and support to Artcite’s operations and ongoing goals as an artist-run organization. Artcite is governed by an active, dynamic, and working board. While not involved with day-to-day operations, Board Members may be asked to undertake tasks for Artcite around various matters including governance, community development, fundraising, financial management, administration, technical expertise, and more.

Each member is also expected to attend monthly board meetings and work collaboratively with Artcite staff, members, and volunteers.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare for and attend monthly board meetings as well as Artcite’s Annual General Meeting in November of each year.

  • Serve on sub-committees which actively work to help the organization, with and not limited to, governance, policy, community engagement, finances, administration, technical expertise.

  • Attend and participate in Artcite’s events, fundraisers and initiatives, including sharing promotional materials and spreading word in the Windsor-Essex community.

  • Maintain a good understanding of Artcite's mandate, vision and core values. Represent and advocate for Artcite in both the community and at meetings with potential partners.

  • Help shape organization policy and procedures. Review and monitor Artcite’s operational policies in relation to its mission and objectives.

  • Participate in the hiring of the Artcite staff.

  • Contribute an informed, inclusive and open-minded perspective. Keep up to date about community issues and cultural conversations relevant to Artcite’s mission.

The following qualities and skills are greatly appreciated, however Artcite acknowledges the potential barriers at play in calls such as these does not limit applicants based on this list.

  • Passion for the arts: Experience with artistic programming, coordinating, volunteering and practice.

  • Leadership, decision-making skills: Experience with coordinating or governance in a not-for-profit setting.

  • Skills supporting Artcite’s ongoing operations: Knowledge of cultural granting programs and streams, accounting/financial management, fundraising, advocacy, community development, capacity building, human resources and legal, strategic planning, and more.

  • Technical expertise: Knowledge or skills for helping gallery maintenance, exhibition installation, website, back-end, etc.

  • Community-minded: Possessing strong communication and interpersonal skills with a drive to get involved directly in the community.
