Kites for Palestinian Liberation 🪁🍉
Saturday, September 28, 3–6pm
Join us for a day of creativity and solidarity, inspired by Refaat Alareer’s poem, If I Must Die, which uses the imagery of the kite as a symbol for hope, love, and liberation. All are welcome! Everything is free!
→ Kite-Making Workshop
Participants will have the opportunity to design and decorate their own kites. After the workshop, we’ll head to the riverfront to fly our custom-made creations. All materials will be provided!
→ Screening of Some Strings
Some Strings is a collection of unreleased filmic gestures rooted in Palestine by filmmakers and artists from around the world. The collection draws inspiration from poet and educator Refaat Alareer, who, along with seven members of his family, was killed in targeted Israeli strikes.
In his final poem, If I Must Die, published five weeks before his death, Alareer urged those who remain to create a kite from the fragments of his belongings—an enduring symbol of resistance.
Launched in March 2024, Some Strings has brought together over 100 artists, creating nearly six hours of short films. Since June 25, the films have been shown worldwide in cinemas, festivals, and as pre-programs, with no set end date.
if i must die,
you must live
to tell my story
to sell my things
to buy a piece of cloth
and some strings,
(make it white with a long tail)
so that a child, somewhere in gaza while looking heaven in the eye awaiting his dad who left in a blaze— and bid no one farewell
not even to his flesh
not even to himself—
sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up above and thinks for a moment an angel is there bringing back love
if i must die
let it bring hope
let it be a tale
