Artist Statement
“During our current resurgence there are more and more young people coming out of colonized families or CAS wanting to reconnect with their Indigenous cultures. If you have no understanding you might find yourself consulting grandmother google producing a myriad of pan Indigenous teachings not of your territory. There are teachings you will never find online, but there are also special connections that only you will know. PAWATAMIHK is the Michif work for dream, and this installation becomes activated by 2S artist Tejhler Leaderbeater's performance of the contemporary youth walking in two worlds. Using the vaporwave aesthetic, Pawatamihk: The Prophecy of the White Lodge, re-frames nostalgia for the 90s for the Indigenous gaze; to a precolonial past we have never witnessed coexisting with an apocalyptic future.” -Rihkee Strapp
