Day Without Art

What do we do?

As an ever changing community space and artist-run centre, Artcite Inc. strives to be a supporter of all creatives and to recognize the contributions made by each individual. The gallery has a longstanding dedication to observing Day Without Art which coincides with the World Health Organization’s AIDS Awareness Day. We wanted to share a snapshot* of years passed, as part of our 40th anniversary story.

*Please note that the documentation and digitization of our archive is an ongoing process and the images/notes presented on this page are only a slice of the vast history of the organization. If you have an Artcite DWA story or photo you would like to add, you are welcome to let us know at info@artciteinc.ca .

December 1st, 1990

The second annual Day Without Art. An international day of observance and mourning which coincides with the World Health Organization's AIDS Awareness Day. The day has been set aside to celebrate the achievements and lives of colleagues and friends. It serves not only as a collective act to remember those who have died of AIDS both within and outside the creative communities but calls attention to the continued urgency of the epidemic.

Artcite, in collaboration with the AIDS Committee of Windsor, mounted a one day(shrouded) exhibition of VISUAL AIDS posters as well as screenings of "PWA Power” "Working Together" and "Common Threads".

AIDS Committee President Terri Grant-Galli was special guest speaker.
